Bhumi sat down with Steve Preston, the author of ‘Portfolio Careers’ to discuss ‘What is a Portfolio Career?’

Steve started his career working in the travel industry. After being made redundant he set up his Career & People Development consultancy.

o coined the phrase ‘the portfolio life’ and Peter Drucker. Peter Drucker stated that “corporations once built to last like pyramids are now more like tents. You can’t design your life around a temporary structure.’ The idea of this being that people need to take control and responsibility for their careers. They need to start thinking differently. 

Both Charles and Peter discuss the idea that there are other ways to earn a living away from the traditional thinking that any job had to be 40 hours over 5 days. They both challenged convention, something ahead of the curve considering they were both published 20-30 years ago. 

Portfolio careers today

Nowadays the portfolio career concept is embraced across the board, from those leaving universities to people in their 50’s and 60’s. 

Steve argues that within portfolio careers, people are constantly updating their skills as the traditional ‘moving up the ladder’ approach has been replaced with sideways moves. By working within different types of projects people are helping to future proof their careers, by having a huge range of skills. Often they end up gaining skills in a before unknown area for them. 

Steve believes a lot of this comes down to mindset. It is the people that have, what he calls a ‘growth mindset’ and are flexible and open to change that will have a real chance to thrive in the future. 

Another big shift that Steve has noticed is that so many people are now ‘lifestyle-focused’ and no longer ‘do work for work’s sake’ and instead want to do something that makes them happy and creates a blended working lifecycle.
